Standard Chartered in Vietnam
In Vietnam, Standard Chartered’s history can be traced back to 1904 when the Bank opened its first branch in Saigon (now is Ho Chi Minh City). We believe in the long term prospect of Vietnam and are fully committed to the Vietnamese market and our clients and customers since coming back to the country in 1990.
On August 1, 2009, we commenced operations in our locally incorporated entity – Standard Chartered Bank (Vietnam) Limited, an important milestone of Standard Chartered’s development in Vietnam. The bank currently has four branches (two in Hanoi and two in Ho Chi Minh City). The Head Office is based in Hanoi.
We bring our international expertise and experience in Asia, Africa and the Middle East to Vietnam, building a broad business that helps to develop the Vietnamese financial service sector as well as helping clients to develop their businesses. Standard Chartered has acted as the sole Sovereign Credit Ratings Advisor to the Vietnamese Government since March 2012.
The Bank provides a full suite of banking products and services for corporates, financial institutions as well as small and medium enterprises and individuals. We also play an active role in building the communities through many programs that promote social and economic development focusing on health, youth and financial education.
Our History
Standard Chartered Bank’s key milestones in Vietnam
1904: Established first office of Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China in Saigon, located in Rue Paul Bert (which is Tran Quang Khai street now)
1914: Set up Hai Phong office of Chartered Bank of India, Australia & China
1920s: Became one of the first foreign banks to finance Vietnam’s flourishing rice export businesses and provide major credit facilities to trade finance sector
1950s: Continued to expand in Vietnam through 3 agencies in Saigon (2 Rue Georges Guynemer, name changed to Vo Di Nguy in 1955), Hai Phong and Hanoi
1969: Chartered Bank of India, Australia & China merged with Standard Bank of British South Africa forming Standard Chartered Bank. Its Saigon office remained at the location of Chartered Bank office in Vo Di Nguy street (now 3-5 Ho Tung Mau, District 1, HCMC) till end of 1974
1990: Standard Chartered Bank reopened for business in Vietnam
1994: The first British bank to reopen a full branch in Hanoi
2007: Launched Retail Banking
2009: Standard Chartered Bank strengthened its roots by locally incorporating as Standard Chartered Bank (Vietnam) Limited
2010: Inaugurated 3rd and flagship branch in Hanoi by H.R.H Prince Andrew The Duke of York
2014: Celebrate 110 years in Vietnam
2017: Inaugurated fourth branch located in District 7, Ho Chi Minh City
