Victoria University Of Wellington Student Health

Find out how to become a registered patient at Student Health and what this means for you.

Registering with us means that Student Health will become your primary medical practice and your general consultations at our clinics will be free.

Once registered, you can still attend any other general practice as a casual patient, so you’ll still be able to see your family doctor at home during the holidays.

We recommend registering as soon as you can, before your first appointment. Getting this sorted early means that we’ll have enough time to receive your medical records from your previous doctor, and gain an understanding of your medical history before you arrive.

How to register

To register, fill out our enrolment form and email a scanned copy to [email protected] along with a copy of your photo ID. Alternatively, bring these items along to one of our reception desks, or mail them to our postal address.

Acceptable forms of photo ID include:

  • a copy of your student ID, driver’s license or passport (NZ citizen or resident)
  • a copy of your passport, and proof of your visa such as a scanned copy of your Resident Visa, Work Visa/Permit (non-NZ citizen or resident).

Check whether you’re eligible on the enrolment form—you’re eligible if you belong to one of the categories (A-K) listed on the second page.Download the form

International students

Some international students are eligible to register with Student Health, but not all. This is because not all international students are eligible for publicly funded healthcare in New Zealand.

You’re eligible to register if you hold one of the following:

  • a NZ Development Scholarship (formerly NZAid)
  • a Commonwealth Scholarship
  • a resident visa, or permanent resident visa.

In some cases, a work visa may also make you eligible. Contact Student Health’s main reception or Wellington University International to find out if this is an option for you.

Non-registered international students may have some or all of their medical costs covered by an insurance provider, such as Studentsafe. If you’re not sure whether or not this applies to you, contact Wellington University International for further information, or ask our main reception when booking your appointment.

Casual patients

Effective Monday 16 July 2018, Student Health only sees students registered with Victoria University of Wellington’s health service, and international students who are covered by insurance.

Services available for casual patients

Casual patients can continue to access:

  • Student Counselling
  • Aegrotat and AEF applications during the exam period
  • Free Flu and Gardasil vaccination.

We will always see students who present with acute medical emergencies, whether they are registered or casual.
