The School of Education undertakes research-led teaching in a range of areas including curriculum, education policy and its implementation, educational psychology, and pedagogy. Staff are focused on improving education across all sectors through teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level, undertaking educational research and providing service to the wider community.

Teaching and research emphases in the School include:

  • initial teacher education
  • assessing learning outcomes for children and young people
  • curriculum development
  • educational leadership
  • enhancing pedagogy and classroom management
  • enhancing the social and emotional development of children and young people
  • improving educational opportunities and outcomes for students who are culturally and linguistically diverse

  • the scholarly study and implementation of education policy,
  • the development and use of nationally mandated assessment tools and the use of educational technology.

The School is committed to developing innovative solutions for enhancing the success of Māori and Pasifika students at all levels of education. It offers courses as part of teacher education qualifications and courses for students undertaking Education majors as part of the Bachelor of Arts degree. The School also provides post-graduate courses that contribute to Masters of Education, Masters of Educational Psychology and Masters of Secondary School Leadership qualification, as well as a PhD programme.

Study while you work

Postgraduate study can be part-time or full-time, and there are both face-to-face and online pathways. On-campus classes are held late in the afternoon or as block courses over several days or on weekends, and many courses are offered online or in blended form with the option for online attendance. Research

The Wellington Faculty of Education has a strong focus on research that enhances educational policy and practice from early childhood through to tertiary education. Postgraduate courses are informed by research-led teaching, and you will benefit from collaboration across education disciplines.

Careers

Postgraduate study in education will develop your skills in research, writing, critical thinking and problem solving. If you complete an academic qualification you might find work as a researcher or policy analyst in a government organisation, or work in counselling, social services or human resources.



Those doing one of the professional teaching qualifications will graduate ready to work as a school teacher or move into a principal’s role.
