Victoria University Of Wellington Annual Report

The Annual Report provides an overview of Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington’s financial performance and a look back on the highlights of 2019.

Among the highlights in 2019 were the University’s refresh of its Strategic Plan and visual identity, the introduction of an ambitious net-zero carbon policy across all operations, and the latest stage of the project to develop a Living Pā in the University’s marae complex.

The report records the year’s achievements in teaching and learning, research, and engagement with our local, national, and global communities.

These included once again topping New Zealand’s research quality rankings by coming first in the Performance-Based Research Fund, the country’s main measure of intensity of quality research. External research revenue, another key performance indicator, increased by 16% to $81.3 million.

Another area where the University saw growth was in Equivalent Full-Time Students, with an increase to 17,861, including more international students.

Māori and Pasifika numbers grew as percentage of the domestic student body and we introduced support services for both to ensure the increase continues, an important goal for the University.

There were also new academic programmes and expanded Trimester 3 course offerings.

Our graduates remain in demand, with 96% in employment, further study, and not seeking work in their first year post-graduation.

The quality of our research and teaching makes Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington the university of choice in New Zealand and further afield, with students from more than 115 countries part of our community in 2019.

By reflecting on our progress each year, we will continue to improve the education and experience we offer those students, while also conducting research and introducing innovations that respond to the challenges of our time.
