University Of Waikato Parking

The Parking Service exists to ensure that University of Waikato parking areas, roads, footpaths and other areas are used in accordance with safe parking practice, as well as providing a number of specific services as listed below.

Unisafe is available to walk you to and from your vehicle if you feel vulnerable or unsafe. This service extends to the University boundaries and does not include walking or driving people to home addresses or private car parking facilities outside the campus.

Please call x4444 or 07 838 4444 and give 10-15 minutes notice for this service.

The Parking Service is coordinated by the Security Manager, phone x6006 or email [email protected]

The Parking Service:

  • Getting to Campus: Information for staff, students and visitors about parking areas, what it will cost and how to pay.
  • Manages the allocation of Staff Parking Permits (applied for via Aku Mahi), which all permanent staff are entitled and required to display, to indicate the right to park in Permit Parking areas.
  • Provides ad hoc signage for maintenance closures, special events, conferences and directional signage.

Notification of such requests must be received via Kuhukuhu at least 3 working days prior to the event.

  • Provides a general parking management service for one-off events such as Graduation. There may be a charge for any costs incurred.
  • Oversees the self-service visitor parking booking system available to staff.
  • Manages the campus parking facilities and ensures compliance with safe parking practice, in designated parking areas. This includes taking action of either wheel-clamping or towing where vehicles are parked incorrectly. The fee for wheel-clamp removal is $50 (GST inclusive) if parked in LTH or General Parking areas, or $100 (GST inclusive) if parked in a Reserved Numbered park. The fee is payable at the Finance counter, TSR (The Gateway); or at the Security Services Centre B Annex.
  • Ensures road and parking signage is maintained in an appropriate manner.
  • Advises on policy concerning the provision of parking spaces, funding, and methods of parking allocation.

Parking charges apply on the Hamilton campus Monday–Friday, 8.30am–4.30pm (except public holidays). General parking outside of these times is free. Motorcycle parking is free at all times in the designated M/C parking areas.

Where to park and how to pay

  1. Find a park in any of the general parking areas in Gates 1, 2a, 2b, 3a, 3b or 10 (see map). You cannot park in a numbered/named park because these are reserved for permit holders at all times (clamping fees apply).
  2. Go to the nearest silver payment machine:
    1. Enter your licence plate number
    2. Select tariff option (day, week, semester)
      1. Enter your student ID number (for the semester rate only).
    3. Select payment method. Machines are either:
      1. eftpos + credit/debit/Paywave, or
      2. coin + credit/debit/Paywave
  3. A receipt is available on request, but you don’t need to display it on your cars dashboard (your licence plate number is proof that you have paid).

There is also a small number of short-term parks in Gate 5 off Hillcrest Road, and in the main carpark in Gate 1 off Knighton Road – these parks use the a Pay & Display system (blue machines) and are generally for visitors or people in a hurry.

Staff parking

Staff can choose to pay for a reserved Numbered Park, or an annual Licence to Hunt (LTH) permit that allows them to continue parking in the designated staff parking areas – see the FAQs for more details. Staff can also choose to use the Pay-by Plate option and park in the general parking areas if they don’t bring their car to campus regularly. Work out the best option for you.

Carpool to campus

Carpooling saves you money by splitting the cost of driving and parking among several commuters. It’s also a good way to meet new people, and better for the environment.

RideLink

The University provides preferential parking areas in Gates 1 and 10 for people that share rides to campus. These parking spaces are labelled as reserved for registered RideLink permit holders. RideLink can also put you in touch with other staff and students offering or looking for a ride in your area. Find out more about RideLink.

Let’s Carpool

Let’s Carpool, the award-winning national carpooling scheme, makes it easy to find other commuters in your area. This is a public site that will put you in touch with other drivers/passengers who use a similar route. Find out more or register at Lets Carpool

Catch the bus to campus

  • The Orbiter service circles the city clockwise and anti-clockwise and stops on Knighton Road outside Gate 2.
  • Route 2 (Silverdale) stops a short distance from the campus on Hillcrest Road (near St John’s College)
  • The Cambridge Route 20 also stops a short distance from campus, near the Hillcrest Warehouse.

Cycling and walking to campus

For those who live close to campus, cycling or walking is a cheap and sustainable transport option, and you’ll keep fit doing it. Hamilton City Council is constantly improving cycle and walk ways around and through the city.

The University has more than 1300 bike racks on campus. It also offers secure bike storage cages between G and R block, underneath L block, and on the ground level of C block. The bond for an access key ranges from $20-$50 per year which is refundable when it’s returned to the Security Office. To get access to a bike cage, call Security on 07 838 4444 or visit them in the BX building. Showers and changing room facilities are also available at various locations around campus.
