University Of Waikato Biology

Biological Sciences is for those who love life. Whether you want to stand in a metre of mud, on top of a tree, under the sea or on a kilometre of Antarctic ice, biology is for you.

Our students have many opportunities; they can be ecologists working towards ecosystem restoration, physiologists aiming to understand how organisms function, or geneticists using DNA as the key to identifying diseases of organisms. With biology as a great start to your career, our graduates have secured positions around the world, testimony to the international standing of our degrees.

From 2018, Biological Sciences has been split into and replaced by the subjects Ecology & Biodiversity and Molecular & Cellular Biology at the Hamilton campus. Year 3 of Biological Sciences is still available to students studying at our Tauranga campus who have already started the NZ Diploma in Environmental Management – Marine or Terrestrial (Levels 5 and 6) at Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology.

Molecular and Cellular Biology

Molecular and Cellular Biology is an interdisciplinary field combining biochemistry, microbiology, genetics and physiology to study how cells function at the molecular level.  This subject is available as a major for the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Science (Technology), and a minor in any qualification.
