Otago Medical School comprises three campuses:

Our administrative centre is located in Dunedin’s Health Sciences precinct, adjacent to the main University of Otago campus and opposite Dunedin Hospital.

The medical degree

We are perhaps most well-known for our Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB ChB) programme, more commonly known as the medical degree.

After entry to Medicine (usually after completion of the competitive Health Sciences First Year), all medical students undertake two years’ training in Dunedin, known as Early Learning in Medicine (ELM).

Medical students complete their studies with three years’ further training (ALM – Advanced Learning in Medicine), in either Christchurch, Dunedin, or Wellington.

Other health professional programmes

We also train medical laboratory scientists (in Dunedin) and radiation therapists (in Wellington). These are restricted-entry programmes.

Postgraduate programmes

At each campus we offer a number of postgraduate programmes, ranging from research-based honours, masters’, and PhD programmes, through to short courses and continuing professional development (CPD) activities for working medical professionals.

Many of our postgraduate programmes are open to graduates of non-medical or non-biomedical science disciplines.
