The University of Otago, Christchurch is located in Christchurch, the major urban centre of the South Island of New Zealand. We are an off-site campus of the Dunedin-based University of Otago.
Our campus is the base for medical and postgraduate health education and health research in Christchurch. We collaborate closely in our research and student programmes with the region’s hospitals run by the Canterbury District Health Board, and other community health agencies.
We have more than 1000 students on campus. This includes medical students in their three clinical years of training, and postgraduate health sciences students undertaking a range of programmes to PhD level.
The University of Otago, Christchurch was the top ranked of New Zealand’s four medical schools in the Government’s 2012 and 2006 Performance Based Research Funding Assessments (PBRF).
We get most of our research funding from contestable sources outside the University. Campus researchers earned more than $17m in external grants in 2016, in addition to $7.5 million in government PBRF funding. We also generate $25 million from student teaching/training.
