University Of Canterbury Postgraduate Diploma in Art Curatorship

The Postgraduate Diploma in Art Curatorship is a one-year programme made up of four practice-oriented and fascinating courses. The Diploma will appeal to students intending to work in museums, art galleries, and commercial art sectors.



Entry requirements

Students must be qualified with either:

  • a Bachelor of Arts; or
  • a Bachelor of Fine Arts; or
  • other qualifications of an equivalent standing; or
  • have evidence of extensive practical, professional, or scholarly experience to the satisfaction of the Academic Board.

Students with English as an additional language are also required to meet UC’s English language requirements.

Entry will be approved by the Dean of Arts (Academic) on the recommendation of the Art History Department Programme Coordinator.

How to apply

Applications for the Diploma require an up-to-date CV detailing relevant study, roles, and work experience; a full academic transcript of your tertiary-level studies; and a recent writing sample (eg, an essay on a topic related to art). These must be emailed directly to the Programme Coordinator.

You must also contact the Programme Coordinator to arrange a meeting or phone conversation where you will discuss your intentions for the programme, and what you hope to get out of it.

How do I plan my diploma?

To qualify for the PGDipArtCuratorship a student must satisfactorily pass three compulsory Art Curatorship courses and one optional course from Art History or Art Theory programmes.

This includes a 4–6 week internship with a local museum, art gallery, or related centres as part of the coursework.

The Diploma is studied full-time for 1 year, or up to 2 years part-time.

Subjects and courses

The PGDipArtCuratorship is made up of four courses:



  • ARTC 402 Never Neutral: Museums in Context
  • a special project in staging an exhibition (ARTC 404)
  • a gallery internship (ARTC 401)
  • one optional 400-level course from Art History or Art Theory
