If you are interested in languages and are studying an alternative degree programme at UC, you can do a course or two in your language of choice per year.
The Certificate in Languages (CertLang) is also available to study part-time.
Entry requirements
Admission to UC with University Entrance (or equivalent) is required to enrol.
Students with English as an additional language are also required to meet UC’s English language requirements.

How do I plan my certificate?
Possible qualification structure for Certificate in Languages
Each small block represents a 15-point course. However, some courses may be 30 points or more.

The CertLang is made up of 60 points (four standard courses) at 100 and/or 200-level from Bachelor of Arts language subjects, and can be awarded in up to two language subjects.
It can be completed in a minimum of one semester full-time (6 months), or up to a maximum of 5 years part-time.
You can transfer the credits you gain during the Certificate in Languages to either the Diploma in Languages or the Bachelor of Arts (and some other degrees), as long as you have not already graduated with the Certificate.

The Certificate requires 60 points in total (four standard courses) at 100 and/or 200-level.
You can choose from up to two of the nine languages offered at UC:

- Russian
- Spanish
- Te Reo Māori
- Ancient Greek
- Chinese
- French
- German
- Japanese

Study in languages and culture offers a variety of career opportunities, especially overseas. Graduates may find work in industries such as government, tourism, teaching, foreign trade, media, journalism, and diplomacy. Fluency in multiple languages is a highly employable trait in several occupations.
UC Graduates will also be equipped with cultural awareness, advanced communication, and critical analysis skills.
