Overview
Bioprocess Engineering uses biology for sustainable and effective processes, and for the design of better products, such as medicines and vaccines, beverages, vitamins, dairy products, detergents, foods, and clean water. This minor will help you to create an interesting and diverse career path in rapidly evolving industries.
Study in this area is the perfect option for those who have an interest in Biological Sciences as well as engineering, as there is an increasing demand for Engineering graduates with knowledge and appreciation of biological processes.
Students study towards the Bioprocess Engineering minor alongside Chemical and Process Engineering in the Bachelor of Engineering with Honours.

Courses
UC offers a minor in Bioprocess Engineering as part of the Bachelor of Engineering with Honours. Students intending to complete this minor must also complete the Chemical and Process Engineering discipline.
Bioprocess Engineering minor
The following courses are required for the Bioprocess Engineering minor throughout the degree:
- ENCH 281 Principles of Biology for Engineers
- ENGR 407 Bioprocess Engineering 1
- ENCH 482 Bioprocess Engineering 2
- ENCH 494 Process Engineering Design 3
- ENCH 495 Research Project
ENCH 494 or ENCH 495 must be taken with a bioprocess engineering focus approved by the Director of Studies.
Students must also meet the requirements for the Chemical and Process Engineering discipline.
Career opportunities
There is an increasing demand for Engineering graduates with an appreciation and knowledge of biological sciences. The manufacture of new materials and many pharmaceutical and healthcare products, including medicines and vaccines, relies upon the application of biology to industrial processes.
Examples of industry products and processes using biological engineering include biodegradable plastics, biological waste treatment for water and gas cleaning, bio-organic chemistry in pharmaceuticals, and creating sustainable biofuels.
