University Of Canterbury Admission Eligibility

Our general undergraduate degrees are flexible three-year degrees that allow you to study a wide range of subjects, while specialising in your major subject. Specialist undergraduate degrees are also offered and these take between three and four years to complete. The degree structure of our specialist degrees is very prescribed as they prepare students for a specific field.

Our graduate diplomas provide an opportunity for you to acquire substantial knowledge in a particular subject in a relatively short time. They can be taken as a way of meeting the prerequisites for further study, for developing your interests and for enhancing your employment prospects

Admission to Postgraduate qualifications

Our research-based honours and masters degrees and postgraduate diplomas are offered in wide range of subjects and take between one to two years to complete. The degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is also offered and this normally requires three years of full-time academic research

Apply for admission to Study abroad

If you are studying at university in your home country and want to spend a semester or two studying at Canterbury you can apply for our study abroad programme. We offer a certificate of proficiency for courses completed, which can be taken back to your own university as a component of your degree there.

Incoming student exchange

If your university in your home country is one of our student exchange partners then you can apply to study with us for one or two semesters as an exchange student. We offer a certificate of proficiency for courses completed, which can be taken back to your own university as a component of your degree there.Application form and instructions can be found on our Incoming Exchange page.

English language courses

English language courses offered in partnership with CCEL will prepare you for study at Foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate degree level. The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) courses offered by CCEL are designed to provide you with the specific language and study skills you will need to succeed in academic study.Further details and application form are available from the CCEL site.

Foundation Studies



UCIC’s Foundation Studies programme will enable you to meet the academic and English language entry requirements for most of the undergraduate degree programmes offered by the University of Canterbury. You will develop your English language and study skills as well as gain an introduction to subjects in your chosen academic field.
