The University Of Canterbury Science

Science is about understanding and improving the natural world through observation, experimentation, modelling, and calculation.

Qualifications and courses

  • Choose from a large range of qualifications in science and communication disorders at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Subjects

Choose from 19 major subjects and 32 disciplines in total.

Antarctic Studies

  • Examine major environmental and contemporary issues facing Antarctica.

Astronomy

  • Astronomy and astrophysics study the nature and distribution of matter and radiation throughout all time and space in the Universe.

Biochemistry

  • Biochemistry is the study of the chemistry of life, and its innovations are at the cutting edge of science, research and industry.

Biological Sciences

  • Biologists study living things and seek solutions to global issues relating to food supply, the environment and disease.

Chemistry‌

  • Chemistry deals with the composition, structure and behaviour of matter at the atomic and molecular level.

Computer Science

  • Computer Science is about helping people work efficiently and effectively by analysing needs and constructing appropriate solutions.

 Data Science

  • Data science combines the power of mathematics, statistics and computer science to extract the value from complex data

Economics

  • Economics is the study of social decision making in the production, exchange, distribution and consumption of goods and services

Environmental Science

  • This interdisciplinary field studies the environment’s structure and functioning, and the impact of human interactions.

Finance

  • Finance is forward-focused, and examines the acquisition and allocation of financial resources. It is largely about future planning for firms or investors.

Financial Engineering

  • Financial Engineering combines financial and economic theory with the mathematical and computational tools that underpin the financial industry.

Geography

  • Geography is an exciting and distinctive discipline at the interface between Science and Arts. It finds innovative solutions to contemporary social problems.

Geology

  • Geology is incredibly diverse and multidisciplinary. It’s about understanding the Earth for the benefit of humans and the environment.

Linguistics

  • Linguistics is the scientific study of language, including language structure, acquisition and processing; social and cultural factors; and systems of speech.

Mathematics

  • Mathematicians are skilled independent thinkers and problem solvers, skills which are valued in many careers, and in Science, Engineering, and Commerce.

Medicinal Chemistry

  • Medicinal chemistry is the link between lab-based synthetic chemistry and the real world of health care, prescription medicines, and pharmaceuticals.

Philosophy

  • Philosophy is for anyone who is intellectually inquisitive, likes ideas, likes to think and explore. It tackles issues and questions that arise for everyone.

Physics

  • Physics aims to understand the behaviour of matter and energy from the scale of subatomic particles to that of the Universe itself.

Psychology

  • Psychology is the scientific study of behaviour and associated biological, cognitive and social processes in humans and other animals.

Speech and Language Pathology

  • Our hands-on qualifications offer clinical experience with clients of all ages, both at our campus clinics and externally.

Statistics

  • Statistics is a rapidly advancing science with many avenues open for study and work. There are few disciplines that do not use statistics in some form.

Water Resource Management

  • Water Resource Management courses investigate sustainable techniques to assess and protect our freshwater resources.
