LURFC is an open club for students and non-students alike who come from regions around the country. The club plays in the Christchurch Metropolitan Rugby Competition and in 2016 LU Rugby continued to grow its numbers with the inclusion of a Women’s team to compliment the Senior Division 1, Senior Division 2, Colts Premier, and Colts Reserve teams.
It was an incredibly successful year for the club with the Senior Division 1 side winning the Hawkins Division 1 Trophy Championship for the second year in succession. The Premier Colts achieved the three-peat winning the Hawkins Colts Premier Championship for the third year in succession, while the Senior Division 2 side reached the Championship semi-finals, the Colts Reserves won the Plate competition, and the Women’s team made the top six competition. The club had numerous representative players across all grades at the provincial, national, and international levels.
The success of the club and the higher honours that many of our players gain is attributable to the good structures and systems that have been developed in educating athletes and students physically, mentally and holistically, providing professional and qualified coaches and building a strong and encompassing culture that players and supporters want to be part of.
