Calculating Your Grade Point Average

You can view your cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) on MyAucklandUni, the Student Portal.

If you can’t see it, please check Why can’t I see my GPA or points progress on MyAucklandUni?

Your GPA calculation is also shown on your Unofficial Transcript available on Student Services Online, with one GPA calculation per semester and also the cumulative GPA for your entire programme.

To view a video tutorial and see more information, visit How to view your Unofficial Transcript.

The GPA on your Unofficial Transcript is for internal purposes only, although in some cases it may be used to determine eligibility to certain courses. For all other purposes, such as programme eligibility or scholarships, you should contact your faculty as they may use a different method to calculate your GPA.

Because of this, we do not provide an official GPA to you or third parties, as it is an internal measurement and methods of calculating it can vary significantly from faculty and programme*.

Basic Universal Calculation (the final of which can vary significantly*)

Averages are calculated using the following scale to give each grade you receive a numerical value. These are added together and the sum divided by total number of courses you have attempted.

  • 9 for A+
  • 8 for A
  • 7 for A-
  • 6 for B+
  • 5 for B
  • 4 for B-
  • 3 for C+
  • 2 for C
  • 1 for C-
  • 0 for D+, D or D-

In calculating GPA, ‘withdrawals’ (W), ‘did not sit’ (DNS), and ‘did not complete’ (DNC) results are counted as zero. Courses where the only grades are Pass or Fail do not contribute to your GPA.

The above calculations presume that each course enrolment is worth 15 points.

If a course that you have completed or attempted is worth 30 points, you will need to count the course’s numerical value twice: i.e. if there is a 30-point course for which you received a B, you must include the numerical value ‘5’ in your calculations twice and consider the 30-point course as though it is two courses. You must ensure you count the course twice and its grade twice.

Likewise, if a thesis enrolment is worth 60 points, you must treat it as the equivalent of four courses and enter its grade into your GPA calculations four times.

More information regarding grade scales is available at Marking schemes or grade scales at the University of Auckland.
