Master of Business Administration

The AUT Master of Business Administration (MBA) develops your leadership skills and is an invaluable tool to further your business career.

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) is for those aspiring to senior management level, those already in senior management who want to realise their full potential, or those who are self-employed looking for the business skills to succeed.

The MBA is highly regarded by employers and designed to offer you maximum flexibility. The curriculum is designed to meet the needs of the fast paced and complex business environment, where leaders need an advanced understanding of all business divisions and managing cross-cultural teams.

You learn from staff who are leaders in their field, and classes focus on current professional practice and the experiences, learning and challenges of your own work environment.

The MBA induction is normally held on the Friday before term starts.

What you study

To graduate with an MBA you must successfully complete 180 points, made up of core papers (135 points) and elective papers (45 points).

You can choose how many papers you take per term to fit around work demands and personal commitments, provided you complete the qualification  within four years. You can continue working full-time while completing your MBA part-time.

All papers are 7.5 points each unless stated otherwise. Each paper involves six weeks of class learning; one three-hour class per week. This is followed by an examination week then a one-week preparation period for the following term. You can start the MBA at any one of the six terms.

Elective papers

You can also take papers from other areas in AUT and credit up to 45 points to the MBA.



You can also complete elective papers at one of AUT’s international business school partners or complete a special topic paper in a relevant area, subject to the approval of the MBA Director. There are opportunities to work with start-up companies or for you to develop your own business idea or project.

MBA for CIPS Executive Diploma

This MBA pathway is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS) as a route to achieving the CIPS Executive Diploma. The CIPS Executive Diploma is an advanced membership designation for CIPS members (MCIPS) and fellows (FCIPS) seeking further professional development and recognition as Chartered Procurement and Supply Professionals.

Academic requirements for CIPS Executive Diploma

You must successfully complete the MBA programme, including:

  • BSY851 Supply Chain Management
  • MGMT841 Negotiation OR BSYS855 Procurement Management
  • BUSS993 (7.5 points) & BUSS994 (22.5 points) Applied Business Project, on a procurement and supply-related theme

Graduate Profile

Minimum entry requirements

Must have completed one of:

  • A bachelor’s degree OR
  • Graduate diploma OR
  • Relevant professional qualification or professional experience approved to be equivalent to a bachelor’s degree

AND

  • Have a minimum of five years of relevant professional experience since gaining the degree or other qualification

Evidence of work experience will need to be submitted in the form of a letter, on letterhead, from a past or current employer stating the date you started working for the company, your role, responsibilities, and the date you finished working for the company – or that you’re currently employed. 

Admission is subject to the approval of the MBA Director.
