Auckland University Of Technology Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) / Bachelor of Music Conjoint

We designed the Bachelor of Advanced Science (Honours) with budding scientists in mind. It’s for students who want to pursue postgraduate study.

By taking a conjoint with the Bachelor of Music, you can combine your scientific specialisation with your choice of five Music specialisations. For example, you could combine Mathematics with Composition, or Computer Science with Music Studies.

Pushing scientific boundaries requires creative and independent thinking – both of which are fostered by your musical studies – while the discipline and practice of music complements the acute focus necessary for successful scientific research.

In your final year, you will complete an independent scientific project with the guidance of an academic mentor.

Programme structure

You must complete a total of 660 points:

  • 375 points from the BAdvSci(Hons)
  • 255 points from BMus courses
  • 15 points from General Education
  • 15 points from courses available for any programme

You can choose one specialisation for the BAdvSci(Hons) component of your conjoint, and you will usually take four or five BAdvSci(Hons) courses each year. You can also choose to take one or more modules available in the Bachelor of Science Schedule.
For the BMus, the majority of your courses are prescribed for the specialisation you choose. Find out about the music specialisations you can study in your BAdvSci(Hons)/BMus:

  • Creative Practice: Classical
  • Creative Practice: Composition
  • Creative Practice: Jazz
  • Creative Practice: Popular Music
  • Music Studies

You will probably enrol in nine 15-point courses (135 points) each year if you want to complete in five years. You need to maintain a Grade Point Average of 5.0 each year to continue with your conjoint.

Where could this programme take you?

As a graduate you’ll have the skills and expertise to pursue a wide range of career opportunities in New Zealand and overseas. Building a career on stage is a common goal, but the music industry runs on more than performers and composers. There is a collection of people who keep the industry moving. These include writers, managers, producers and teachers. As a BAdvSci(Hons) graduate you could pursue an international research career, or apply your advanced disciplinary knowledge and research skills in an industry of your choice.
