Definition
By health services research, the Centre means: “the study of the health and disability needs of communities, and the organisation, planning, provision, use and effectiveness of personal and population-based health and disability services.”
Strategic goals
The Centre will:
- Undertake quality health services research which draws on inter-disciplinary perspectives, advances knowledge and theory, seeks to inform health policy and practice, and which aims to enhance the health status and well-being of all New Zealanders.
- Recognise, respect and work towards meeting obligations under the Treaty of Waitangi.
- Undertake health services research which aims to promote greater equity and social justice in the allocation and use of health resources.
- Seek to improve dialogue and understanding on health issues within the health sector, between the health sector and the wider community, and internationally.
- Contribute to the promotion of health services research and development strategies in New Zealand.
School of Health
The School of Health—Te Kura Tātai Hauora was established in January 2017 as part of the Wellington Faculty of Health to deliver innovation in health teaching and research. The school offers the Bachelor of Health undergraduate degree with majors in four different areas. As well as new postgraduate study options in the following specialisations:
- Workplace health & safety
- Health policy, planning and service delivery
- Health promotion
Specialist clinical services
Student Health offers a number of different specialist services. We can arrange appointments on campus, or point you in the right direction.
All specialist appointments are by referral only. This means that you’ll need to see a doctor before you are referred on to a specialist. This excludes services such as physiotherapy, optometry and dentistry—you can book in directly to see these professionals.
Specialists at Student Health
You can see the following specialists at either Kelburn or Pipitea campus:
- Dermatologist—skin specialist
- Dietician—free nutritional advice offered by postgraduate dietician students
- Endocrinologist—diabetes specialist
- Health coach
- Health improvement practitioner
- Psychiatrist

Radiology
Student Health make referrals to any local radiology providers. You can discuss your options with a health professional at Student Health.
Physiotherapy
The Physio Spot runs student clinics on the Kelburn campus and at two other locations in Wellington.
This service is not run by Student Health—you’ll need to call 0800 842 749 to book, or book an appointment online.
Optometry
Student Health does not offer appointments with optometrists—however, we do recommend contacting Specsavers or Matthews Eyewear, as these clinics offer student discounts.
Dentistry
Dentistry appointments are likewise not offered at Student Health. If you’re in need of a dentist, you’ll need to arrange this outside of our service. Victoria University of Wellington students receive discounted rates at Capital Dental and Symes de Silva & Associates.
