Overview

The Environmental Process Engineering minor is for environmentally-minded engineers who want to be a part of society’s growing commitment to improving the planet. This minor aligns with UC’s belief in Tuatua (service and responsibility) and our continued focus on being sustainable.



You will learn about strategies, legal requirements, and appropriate mitigation and treatment methods for industrial pollution control, sustainability measures, and cultural issues related to environmental treatment technologies. We prepare you for designing, improving, and operating processes that treat contaminated water, air, and soil.

Students study towards the Environmental Process Engineering minor alongside Chemical and Process Engineering in the Bachelor of Engineering with Honours.

Courses

UC offers a minor in Environmental Process Engineering as part of the Bachelor of Engineering with Honours. Students intending to complete this minor must also complete the Chemical and Process Engineering discipline.



Environmental Process Engineering minor

The following courses are required throughout the degree:

  • ENCH 390 Process Engineering Design 1
  • ENGR 407 Bioprocess Engineering 1 or ENCN 375 Sustainable Engineering for a Changing Climate
  • ENGR 405 Industrial Pollution Control
  • ENCH 494 Process Engineering Design 3
  • ENCH 495 Research Project

ENCH 494 or ENCH 495 must be taken with an environmental process engineering focus approved by the Director of Studies.

Students must also meet the requirements for the Chemical and Process Engineering discipline.

Career opportunities

If you’re worried about the state of our planet – the impact of human activities and technology on the environment, or the strain on our natural resources – then this minor will prepare you to use engineering processes to develop innovative and sustainable solutions for complex environmental problems, and manage and minimise impact.

Students interested in this area understand their responsibility towards improving conservation, sustainability, and management of natural and man-made environments.

Environmental Process Engineering is multi-disciplinary and involves stakeholder communication. Roles can primarily be found in consulting firms in Aotearoa New Zealand and overseas, as well as in local councils, infrastructure service providers as well as large firms involved in food production or energy processing.
