From the fundamentals of scientific research to engineering applications, the BE(Hons)/BSc offers the skills and understanding necessary for innovation in a technologically complex ecosystem.
With nine engineering specialisations and a huge selection of science majors, the BE(Hons)/BSc allows you to tailor your studies to suit your specific interests.
You may consider studying complementary disciplines. For example, you could pair Exercise Sciences or Chemistry with Mechatronics to serve the increasing demand for smart devices and robotics. Alternatively you could take a School of Environment course and develop your ability to provide engineering solutions for a sustainable future.
As more global industries seek people who can help to advance research and technology, your grasp of scientific and engineering principles will enable you to serve society’s needs.
The BE(Hons)/BSc conjoint programme can be completed in five years (10 semesters) if you are studying full time. You will be required to take:
- 420 points from BE(Hons) courses
- 255 points from BSc courses
- 15 points from General Education
Your exact enrolment will depend on your chosen major(s) and specialisation. For the BE(Hons), your first-year courses are prescribed, whereas Science courses will depend on your choice of major(s). Please note that the following Science subjects are not available for conjoint degrees:

Conjoint planners are available for each BE(Hons) specialisation. Please see the Engineering and Science conjoint planners and ensure you plan your degree early, as you are required to choose your major for the BE(Hons) toward the end of your first year of the degree.
Practical work is an essential component of the Engineering degree. You must complete a 40-hour workshop practice course in your second year and 800 hours of practical work experience throughout your degree.
Note: You will need to maintain a Grade Point Average of 4.0 each year to continue with your conjoint. You will also need to complete 135 points each year if you wish to complete your programme in five years.

If you’re joining us from secondary school, here’s what you need to enter the programme.
You are guaranteed entry to this programme if you meet these requirements.
- First, you must meet the University Entrance (UE) standard.
- You must also meet the rank score for this programme.
- You may need to have studied certain subjects or achieved credits in particular subjects.
- Some programmes have additional requirements, such as an interview, portfolio or references.
Guaranteed rank score, subject and other requirements
If your rank score is slightly lower than the guaranteed score, we encourage you to still apply. We will consider your application if places are available. If you don’t meet the requirements, you may be able to apply under our Undergraduate Targeted Admission Schemes. For CIE students, AS Mathematics and Physics may be accepted based on the grade achieved. For IB students, SL Mathematics and Physics may be accepted based on the grade achieved.

Further requirements
You must have completed one semester of successful bachelor degree study from a New Zealand tertiary institution, or one year of successful study as part of an acceptable sub-degree qualification from a New Zealand tertiary institution. You will also need a sound background in calculus and physics.
