Nursing has been part of Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington’s portfolio for more than 70 years.
We adopted the name “Graduate School of Nursing and Midwifery” in 2001 and moved our base to The Fieldhouse Centre, 81-83 Fairlie Terrace, Kelburn, Wellington.
In 2006 we added ‘Health’ to our name, reflecting an increasing demand for study programmes designed especially for New Zealand health professionals.
In 2019, with the introduction of our first undergraduate degree, a Bachelor of Midwifery, we adopted the name we use today: The School of Nursing, Midwifery, and Health Practice / Te Kura Tapuhi Hauora.
We are located on Level 7 & 8, Clinical Services Building, Wellington Regional Hospital and have a proud reputation for:
- providing courses that are directly relevant to contemporary healthcare disciplines
- research focused on improving the health and wellbeing of people everywhere
- our academic, professional and practical expertise, which we readily make available to national and international audiences through social and professional critique, and to advance practice, policy and scholarship.

Postgraduate Nursing

To qualify for entry you’ll need a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or equivalent, and must be a registered nurse with a current practising certificate from the Nursing Council of New Zealand.
If you’re looking to focus your study more on management, leadership or education within the health care sector, the School of Nursing, Midwifery, and Health Practice also offers a range of study options in Health.
