University Of Auckland Qs Ranking 2019

The QS World University Rankings publishes the world’s top 1,000 universities. The rankings are based on peer review, citations per staff member, the ratio of staff to students, recruiter review, and the proportion of international staff and international students. In the 2020 rankings, the University of Auckland was ranked =83, the only New Zealand university ranked in the top 100.



Auckland holds a strong position in each of the QS World University Ranking of broad subject areas: Arts and Humanities (48), Social Sciences & Management (53), Life Sciences & Medicine (101), Engineering and Technology (116), and Natural Science (123).

QS also offers rankings for 48 individual subjects. In 2019 the University of Auckland was first in New Zealand in 37 of the 41 subjects in which we were ranked. The University was in the top 50 for 13 of these subjects:

QS Stars University Ratings

The QS Stars rating system aims to give students a broad picture of the qualities of an institution by gathering and assessing information over a range of areas, including facilities, international collaborations and student exchanges, employability of graduates and innovation. The institution is evaluated and awarded a rating of between one and five stars over eight fields and a rating of between one and five + stars for the institution overall.



The University of Auckland scored the highest possible rating of Five Stars Plus – the most awarded to any New Zealand university. Maximum five-star ratings were received in each of the areas evaluated: teaching, employability, research, internationalisation, facilities, innovation, access and discipline rankings and accreditations.

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings

The Times Higher Education publishes the top 1000 universities. The calculation is based on 13 indicators across five broad areas of activity: teaching, industry income, citations, research and international outlook. The University of Auckland ranked =179th in the 2020 rankings.

Times Higher Education also offers rankings for 11 different subject areas. In 2019, the University ranked in the top 100 universities for Education (35), Clinical, pre-clinical and health (97), and Psychology (89).

Shanghai Jiao Tong Academic Ranking of World Universities

Shanghai Jiao Tong University ranks the world’s universities on several indicators of academic or research performance including alumni and staff winning Nobel prizes, highly cited researchers, articles published and the per capita academic performance of an institution. In 2020 the University of Auckland continued to be the highest ranked New Zealand university in the 201-300 band.

Shanghai Jiao Tong Academic Ranking of World Universities also offers rankings for 54 different subject areas. In 2020, the Universtiy ranked in the Top 100 universities for Civil Engineering (27), Food Science & Technology (35)*, Instruments Science & Technology (49)*, Public Health (51-75)*, Education (51-75)*, Nursing (76-100), and Mechanical Engineering (76-100)*.
