Graduation is an opportunity to celebrate the successful completion of your qualification and it’s a special occasion you can share with friends, family and AUT staff.
We hold two graduations each year – Summer Graduation (December) and Winter Graduation (August). Each graduation day usually begins with a street procession, where graduating students and AUT staff walk from Albert Park to the graduation ceremony venue (normally the Aotea Centre). This is a unique opportunity to see everyone in their official academic regalia, with some graduands wearing family korowai or other cultural adornments.
During the graduation ceremony itself, graduands are each presented with their degree or certificate. This formal ceremony takes around two hours, with family and friends invited to watch.
The 2020 Winter Graduation ceremonies will be held in person at Aotea Centre in Auckland Central, on Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 August 2020.

If you’re eligible to graduate
All students we’ve identified as being possibly eligible to graduate should have now received information about the dates and venue for awarding their qualification at graduation. If you haven’t received this information and believe that you will be eligible to graduate this August, you should urgently contact your faculty/school and discuss this with them.
Next steps
The University Graduation Office will contact potentially eligible students advising them of the date and time of their graduation ceremony. Students shouldn’t make any arrangements for travel until they receive this advice from us.
This correspondence is not confirmation of eligibility to graduate. Faculty/school examinations boards meet later to determine which students have successfully completed their programme of study and are eligible to graduate. Once this examination board process is complete, the University Graduation Office will contact students advising them of their successful completion of study or otherwise.
Why AUT initially decided to cancel Winter Graduation
At the time the decision to cancel graduation was made, New Zealand was in alert level 4 which significantly impacted AUT teaching and Semester 1 dates, meaning the planned dates for graduation were no longer achievable. AUT decided to cancel the ceremonies because it has a duty of care and responsibility to ensure the health of our students, and their friends and family, is protected. At the time it also appeared we would remain in alert level 2 for a prolonged period.
